Resumo

O trabalho oferece uma análise ex-post dos encargos financeiros e benefícios econômicos da Copa do Mundo (WC) na Alemanha 2006. Com base nos habituais medidas de custo-benefício, a experiência de WC 2006 parece estar em linha com a atual pesquisa empírica sobre grandes eventos esportivos e estádios esportivos, os quais raramente são identificados significativos benefícios econômicos líquidos. As lições da Alemanha 2006 fornecem um contexto para analisar os riscos e benefícios potenciais para a África do Sul (SA), os anfitriões WC em 2010. Para SA, uma análise cuidadosa pode ser ainda mais urgente para garantir a sustentabilidade do investimento nos estádios. O documento também afirma que o "sentir-se bem" e os efeitos de imagem pública de eventos esportivos não deve mais ser negligenciado em estudos de custo-benefício de eventos esportivos de grande porte, ainda que estes efeitos têm o caráter de bens de experiência, e seu valor são, portanto, susceptível de ser subestimado (Trad.
