A população desta pesquisa abrangeu 900 trabalhadores. The changes that are taking place as a result of globalization have created new working environments which demand ever more qualifications. As a result, very often these obligations overload workers in a variety of ways. It is assumed that these workers will have a diverse range of work-leisure relationships. The impetus for this study is the wideranging social and economic relevance of the subject and the scarcity of information on the association between leisure habits and ability for work. The overall objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between leisure habits and the Work Ability Index (WAI) of the employees of an energy company. This was a cross-sectional study. The study population comprised 900 workers. Sampling assumed an estimated prevalence of physical inactivity during leisure time of 40%, an error of 5%, and design effect of 1.5, resulting sample size of 393. Including an extra 10%, added proportionally, to compensate for possible losses, the indicated that 432 individuals were required for the survey. The actual sample that took part in the survey comprised 371 workers. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire made up of the following sections: individual characteristics, leisure habits, leisure-time physical activity and WAI score # calculated using a questionnaire that was developed by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. Data were tabulated using Epidata 3.1 software and analyzed using the programs Excel 2003, MINITAB 15 and SPSS 14.0. Descriptive statistics were used and the chi-square (c 2) test was used to test for associations between sociodemographic variables, perception of wellbeing, leisure habits and work ability. Binary logistic regression was used to provide more detail on possible associations between work ability (dependent variable) and perception of wellbeing and leisure habits (independent variables) to a 95% confidence interval. The mean age of the sample was 39.4 years, the majority were male, married and with a high educational level. The majority of subjects described their perception of wellbeing as positive, both at work and at home and while at leisure. In leisure time, most of the workers reported participating in physical activity less than they wish and spend more time at home than they would like. The greater part of the sample was classified as sufficiently active during leisure time, and this was true of a higher proportion of the men. Just 6.5% of the subjects were classified as having moderate/low WAI. The variables significantly associated with WAI, when adjusted for the other independent variables, were sex, educational level and perception of wellbeing at home. Although the ICT has not been associated with the leisure habits, been sufficiently active in leisure was significantly associated with internal components of ICT, as demands physical and mental resources for the work, which demands new researches. Further studies are needed in order to deepen our understanding of this relationship; in particular studies of samples that are more heterogeneous in terms of WAI.
