Resumo

Este artigo apresenta uma investigação sobre o uso da retórica de "construção da nação" como motivo para sediar megaeventos esportivos. A literatura anterior sobre megaeventos apresenta o potencial de tais eventos serem usados ​​para unir uma nação. Além disso, a construção da nação foi concebida na pesquisa de relações públicas como consistindo em dois componentes principais; identidade nacional e unidade nacional, que podem ser vinculadas à elaboração de imagens. No entanto, examinar a Copa do Mundo de 2010 na África do Sul e o planejamento para a Copa do Mundo de 2014 no Brasil demonstra um paradoxo que existe entre o conceito de construção nacional e a realização real de megaeventos. Os fundamentos teóricos da construção de uma nação são contrários à realidade dos megaeventos, nos quais grupos minoritários são freqüentemente deixados marginalizados e privados de direitos do resto do país. No mínimo, esses eventos podem servir para dividir, em vez de unir.
