Lipid Levels And Body Composition After Exercise Training In Patients With Heart Failure: Two Case Studies

Introduction
Few studies have examined the effects of a combined strength and aerobic exercise program on patients with chronic
heart failure (ref). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the adaptation, which occurs on body
composition and blood lipids after a systematic strength and aerobic exercise program in patients with chronic heart
failure (CHF).

Methods
Two patients with CHF (x±SD: age: 55.0±7.0 yr, body mass: 77.0±3.7 kg, ejection fraction: 33.0±2.8) participated in an
systematic supervised inpatient exercise program for 14 weeks. The program consisted of three sessions per week (2x10
min aerobic exercise at 65-85% of ΗRpeak and 20 min of resistance exercises at 80% of maximal muscular endurance
capacity). Body composition, exercise stress testing (modified Bruce protocol) and biochemical measurements were
applied at the beginning and after 14 weeks of the program
Results
The individual data appearing below (Table 1) indicate the positive adaptations occurred after exercise training.

Discussion/Conclusions
The above results indicate that a combined training program of strength and aerobic exercise induces positive
anthropometric and biochemical adaptations and increases exercise time. Patients with CHF should be encouraged to
participate in training programs in order to improve their clinical status, be able to overcome regular daily activities and
enhance quality of life.
