Abstract The aim of the present paper is to present a construction of the body image in the art of dance trough a phenomenological analysis based on Merleau-Ponty, in which man is understood in an integrative vision as a world-being. Following this analysis through hermeneutics, on the sensitive dimension the body-subject catches its meaning by transforming stimuli into impressions and knowledge reflecting the subjects´ self-sense. On the physical dimension, the body-subject reflects the pure stimuli with absence of personal meaning. On this perspective, we understand that this totality of existence leads to another sense of totality, the experience. The body that the dancer presents on stage is the same that lives his story. The body-subject during dance achieves the basis for his technique by means of the physique, enlarging the requirements to lead the body into the dance. The sensitive dimension allows the involvement of the speakingbody with the dancing-body, thus creating a movement that is mainly expressive. Trough this analysis it is possible to conclude that the body that connects the dancer to the world, trough a sensation-perception-action link, is the same that connects the dancer to the dance: a body that is both physical and sensitive, as it feels and performs. Key words: body, sensitive, physique, dance.
