The Fluctuation Of Serum Testosterone And Sex Hormone Biding Globin During Summer Intensive Training In Elite Swimmers

Introduction
We usually evaluated athletes’ physiological assimilation effects through testing their serum testosterone, and further
assessed their training ability. Recent study showed us that besides testosterone, sex-hormone-binding-globulin (SHBG)
was also affected by sports training, and both of testosterone and SHBG affected the assimilating activity in the body of
athletes.

Methods
14 best male elite swimmers in the Chinese National Swimming Team were selected as the subjects. During 2 months
summer intensive training period, their blood samples were taken every two weeks. The testosterone and sex-hormonebinding-
globulin were tested with radioimmunoassay on Wallac Wizard 1470-002 in the 4 blood samples of each
subject. 10 provincial club swimmers were selected as control group. They were also in their summer intensive training
period and their blood samples were taken and assayed at the same time and in the same way as elite swimmers did.

Results
The test results were shown in table 1: Test Results
Test results did show significant difference (p=0.011) in serum SHBG level between national swimmers and provincial
swimmers, while no significant difference in serum testosterone level was shown. No significant correlation between
testosterone and SHBG was found as other researchers did.

Conclusions
Serum testosterone and SHBG are independent indexes to show the athletes’ physiological situation. They may not
change in parallel. It will be helpful to test athletes’ SHBG while testing their testosterone to evaluate their
physiological assimilation activity.
