Introduction
The team setter in volleyball was found to be the most valuable player[1]. The aim of the present study was to evaluate
the influence of set’s quality in the intensification and the result of team’s attack.

Methods
The sample was the 12 Greek setters of volleyball teams in the A1 national division in 48-videotaped games of the
2001-2002. The collection of data was ascertained through indirect observation (Video A.S). The parameters evaluated
were: quality of the set, intensification and result of team’s attack. Crosstabs was used for data analyses.

Results
As it is shown in graph 1, spike was the action which was used more than the others. More spesific 93% of the
excellent, 79% of the very good and 43% of the good sets were utilized throught the spike. On the other hand spikers
seamed to prefer short cut when the set was bad (76%) or good (26%). Whereas the position spiking was used after 31
of good, 18% of bad and 11% of very good set’s quality.
Graph 1. Frequency of the intensification of attack in relation to the quality of the set.
Graph 2 indicates the result of attack in relation to the quality of set. Point was the most often showed up result because
as it is obvious 44% of excellent, 30% of very good and 20% of good set’s quality became a succesfull attack for the
team. On the contrary when the set was bad (73%) the result was freeball. Almost similar were the percentages from the
very good (15%) and excellent (14%) sets when the result of the attack was block out. Also equally percentages there
were after good (16%) and very good (15%) sets but the ball these time was towards to the opponent block.
Graph 2. Frequency of the attack’s result in relation to the quality of the set.

Discussion / Conclusions
The statistical criteria Chi-square showed that there were significant effects (p<0.05) among set’s quality and
intensification as well as attack’s result. However quality setting may increase attackers’ choices and puts presure on
the block [2]. Most of the bad sets turned into a short cut from attackers, it is the best they can do in order to save even
at the last second the point. On the other hand a short cut may be a smart action which will give a point to the team [3].
As a conclusion excellent sets should be setters’ target cause they help spikers to win points throught powerfull spikes.
