Welcome to our 2015 World Anti-Doping Code guide

Introduction from Minister for Sport, Tourism and Equalities Helen Grant:

“In 50 days, a new World Anti-Doping Code comes into effect. This is the result of over 18 months of active consultation by the World Anti-Doping Agency and signals a further evolution of the world-wide framework that drives the fight against doping.

“The purpose of revising the Code is to better protect clean athletes around the world. Successful implementation will mean an innovative and robust anti-doping programme that reaches further than ever before, to more athletes, more support personnel and more sport lovers, all of who want to be part of sport free from doping.

“Like all those who care passionately about clean sport, we have long argued that the Code should be tough on those who cheat. The World Anti-Doping Agency listened and from 1 January, we will see tougher sanctions – not just for athletes, but also for those who assist in the doping process.

“The United Kingdom remains committed to playing a full and active part in the global fight against doping in sport. I am confident that UK Anti-Doping will actively lead the way in ensuring everyone understands their rights and responsibilities towards clean sport in this country.

“I encourage you to use these resources to ensure you are best prepared for 1 January and do not risk compromising the integrity of your sport.”

Athletes: What You Need to Know

Clean sport is UKAD’s vision and athletes are at the core of everything we do. The 2015 Code will see a number of significant changes that will affect athletes, including:

Longer bans: Deliberate doping is now punished with a four-year ban
Stringent approach: Unintentional doping will be punished in many more cases with a two-year ban or more
- Whereabouts: The timeframe for three filing failures and/or missed tests is reduced to 12 months, from 18 months

We have prepared a fact sheet for athletes, outlining what's changing and how to manage these changes.

Athlete Support Personnel: How it Applies to You

Athlete Support Personnel have an integral role to play in sport and this has been recognised in the 2015 Code. From 1 January, ASP will be required to:

- Understand and comply with all anti-doping rules
- Use their influence on an athlete positively, helping to foster anti-doping attitudes
- Cooperate with, and support, the testing programme
- Share information of any suspected rule violation

We recognise that the 2015 Code is a complex document and we want to help you with those areas relevant to your work. We have prepared a fact sheet specifically for ASP to assist.

NGBs and Partners: Those Impacted by the 2015 Code

National Governing Bodies and other partner organisations are of fundamental importance to the successful implementation of the 2015 Code. Without the support of NGBs, the fight for clean sport is an impossible one.

We have been in regular contact with organisations to discuss these changes and have also prepared a fact sheet specifically for NGBs to support you in the run up to 1 January.

UKAD is offering NGBs and partners the opportunity to 'drop-in' to the UKAD offices at a designated time to talk through any aspects of their anti-doping programme or implementation plans. Read about UKAD's NGB Support Programme.

UK Sport World Class Performance Conference

UKAD will deliver two workshops at this year’s UK Sport World Class Performance Conference between 24-26 November.

The workshops will help Athlete Support Personnel embrace their new roles and responsibilities in the 2015 Code. UKAD staff will provide tailored advice and support to demonstrate how actions taken now can protect years of effort, commitment and financial investment.

The sessions are designed to protect the well-being of all high performance and elite level athletes, so any delegates involved with these groups are encouraged to speak with us during the event.
