Resumo

This chapter aims to discuss critical issues regarding the use of arts-based data collection approaches within marginalised communities in the Global South. Whilst the usage of arts-based methodologies such as drawings or photos taken by research participants to carry out interviews, and the employment of poetry as a means of data collection have been used in diverse fields across the world, there is a lack of reports of these methods being tried out in Sport for Development and Peace contexts within the Global South. Specifically, limited research exists concerning young women in the (Indo-Fijian) Fijian and South Pacific contexts, particularly in relation to their involvement in the sports arena. This chapter provides a strong theoretical framework for the use of arts-based research methods within the sporting Global South context. By presenting some of the methodologies used in the field, we argue that these data gathering tools can facilitate the rapport between researchers and research participants, therefore producing thicker data than more traditional methodologies.
