Diferentes Níveis de Atividade Física e Depressão Sintomas Entre Adultos Mais Velhos de 18 Países: Um Estudo de Base Populacional da Pesquisa de Saúde, Envelhecimento e Aposentadoria na Europa (SHARE)

Resumo
Objetivo: Analisar a relação entre diferentes níveis de atividade física (AF) e sintomas de depressão em uma amostra representativa de idosos europeus. Métodos: Dados sobre AF, sintomas de depressão e variáveis sociodemográficas de 64.688 (28015 homens) idosos participantes da onda 6 do SHARE foram coletados por meio de uma entrevista face a face. A escala EURO-D de 12 itens foi aplicada para sintomas de depressão. Os participantes relataram a frequência com que praticavam AF de intensidade moderada (MPA) e AF de intensidade vigorosa (VPA). Resultados: Homens e mulheres engajados em MPA e VPA uma ou mais de uma vez por semana tiveram menos sintomas de depressão do que aqueles que se engajaram menos de uma vez por semana. MPA e VPA uma vez ou mais de uma vez por semana foram inversamente associados com o escore de sintomas de depressão. Além disso, o envolvimento em MPA e VPA diminuiu as chances de depressão (ponto de corte de ≥4 sintomas de depressão) em comparação com o envolvimento em AF menos de uma vez por semana. Conclusões: As políticas de promoção da saúde mental devem incluir AF para a prevenção ou tratamento de sintomas depressivos. A AF apresenta benefícios físicos e psicológicos e pode ser usada como uma estratégia geral de promoção da saúde, enfrentando vários problemas ao mesmo tempo.
