Resumo

Outside of school, sport is arguably one of the most important developmental activities among youth. In 1999 the UNESCO declared that “sport is an essential element and an integral part of education and human and social development.” Youth sport has the potential to accomplish three important objectives in youth development (CÔTÉ; FRASER-THOMAS, 2007). First, sport programs provide youth with opportunities to be physically active, which leads to improved participation in physical activities. Second, youth sport programs are critical for the learning of motor skillsand the development of sport performance and expertise. Third, youth sport programs have long been considered important to the personal development of youth, providing opportunities to learn important life skills such as cooperation, discipline, leadership, and self-control.
