The University of Connecticut, a leading Research I Institution, is seeking applicants for a 9-month, assistant/associate professor, tenure-track, faculty position in kinesiology (exercise science) with expertise in molecular biology and applied genetics.  This person will play a vital role in the Department in helping to guide research efforts aimed at better understanding the role of genetics and/or molecular biology of physical activity, diet, environmental stress, and other lifestyle approaches to health and performance.  In addition to conducting research, this individual will be expected to teach appropriate courses related to their scientific expertise, publish scientific manuscripts, and develop a successful extramural grant program.

The Department of Kinesiology is one of four departments in the Neag School of Education.  It provides study in such areas as exercise science, athletic training, physical therapy, and sport management. Recently, the National Academy of Kinesiology and the National Research Council ranked UCONN’s Department of Kinesiology the #1 doctoral degree program in the country.  The department is located in Gampel Pavilion, which houses offices, classrooms, laboratories, and athletic facilities. 

The University of Connecticut is in the fourth year of a “second-phase of development” that will bring 1.3 billion dollars to the university from 2006-2015.  The campus is located on 3,100 rural acres in and around Storrs.  It is comprised of 120 major buildings and presently accommodates 12,000 undergraduates and 6,000 graduate students.  There are many cultural and recreational opportunities on campus and in the surrounding area.  Storrs lies within easy commute of large metropolitan areas such as Boston (1.5 hours), Hartford (.5 hours), and New York City (2 hours).  Its proximity to the ocean (1 hour) and mountains of New Hampshire (2 hours) offers outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities. 

Minimum Qualifications:  The qualified applicant should have an earned doctorate in exercise science or related discipline with specific research experience in molecular biology and applied genetics, to help facilitate growth of the Department’s translational research and personalized health care initiative.  This individual must be capable of fostering collaborative interdisciplinary research among exercise and nutrition scientists, geneticists, cell biologists, and other health related research professionals on the Storrs campus and at the University of Connecticut Health Center.  The applicant should have a proven track record of grant writing activity.  Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:  The ability to contribute through research, teaching and public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the Department and University.

This is a nine-month, tenure track position.  Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.  The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus with the possibility of work at UConn’s regional campuses across the state.
