In 1909, KU professors studied effects of ’stimulants’ on athletes

Three University of Kansas professors, Dr. James Naismith, physical education; C.B. Root, his assistant; and Dr. Chambers from the medical school, tackled the subject of whether alcohol should be given as a stimulant to "dope" an athlete before a game. "We are conducting a series of experiments to learn if possible just what effect these so-called stimulants have upon the nervous system of the human body," Naismith said. Stimulants tested so far were alcohol, strychnine and spirits of ammonia.
