e-Petition for a common European sport vision
www.sportvision2020.eu

Today grassroots sport is engaging 40 % of all Europeans on a regular basis. If we add to this the number of Europeans who are physically active in other ways than sport, 65 % identify themselves as active on regular basis (Eurobarometer, 2010). However, there is a considerable gap between European countries in regard of the degree of involvement of the citizen in public life in general, and in sport in particular.

Close the physical activity gap by giving all Europeans the opportunity to be physically active regularly.
If all EU societies reached the current level of the top 25% of EU countries - then 100 million more Europeans would be regularly active in sport and physical activity

We invite organizations, institutions, MEP’s, individual citizens

to support the petition for the common European vision of :

100 MILLION MORE EUROPEANS ACTIVE

IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY BY 2020.

Strategic Choices for the Implementation of the New EU Competence
EU-wide public consultation Report published!

With the entry into force of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) on 1 December 2009, sport became one of the EU’s supporting, coordinating and supplementing competences. Based on Article 165 TFEU, the EU should develop action aimed at promoting sport in Europe.
In preparation of its proposals to implement the new Treaty provisions, the Commission has carried out broad consultations with all concerned parties, the centrepiece of which was an online consultation in the first half of 2010. The online consultation was launched on 7 April 2010 and remained open until 2 June.

The results of the consultation complement the experience gained with the implementation of the 2007 White Paper on Sport, including evidence gathered through EU studies conducted on selected topics (training and education in sport, sport agents, volunteering in sport), surveys carried out at EU level (Eurobarometer 2010) and EU conferences in the field of sport (EU Sport Forum 2008, EU Sport Forum 2010, anti-doping, licensing systems, funding of grassroots sport).

The Report presents the quantified results of the online questionnaire (section I), list the position papers received in the framework of the consultation (section II) and summarise the results of the analysis of these contributions (section III). In order to ensure transparency, the Report is complemented by the publication of the full text of the position papers, which are clickable in the table in section II.

MOVE2010 2nd announcement out now!
EUROPEAN CONGRESS ON SPORT FOR ALL AND HEALTH: A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Dear colleagues and friends,

As the mayor of the city of Frankfurt, I cordially welcome all guests to MOVE 2010 European Congress on Sport for All and Health – A Strategic Partnership in our city.  I am delighted that the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) is organizing this congress.

Frankfurt, as a sporting city, offers a large variety of excellent options for our citizens to participate in Sport for All activities.

Sport is a commonly accepted part of our lives, however doing sport and physical activity is not implicit.  Often, and unfortunately, work and other leisure activities don’t leave enough time for additional sports activities.  But sport is more than an leisure activity.  It is an important factor for personal well-being, physically, mentally and socially. Therefore it is critically important to continue to promote and increase health through sports.  I am delighted by the large number of initiatives from regional and national organisations aiming to promote and increase health through sport.

Both the Congress organisers and myself are certain that the Congress will be a success and will help to build a network between and profile the current status of the relationship between health and sport.

I wish all participants an enjoyable stay in our city, and a productive and informative Congress.

Your Mayor Petra Roth

Educating City and the Healthy City principles
Interview with Vitor Lippi, Mayor of Sorocaba, Brazil

Sorocaba’s strategic plan takes on board the Educating City and the Healthy City principles: What does it contribute to municipal management?

Sorocaba was looking for international urban development models which could open up opportunities in terms of a city fully committed to education, health, quality of life, participatory democracy, inclusion, social justice and environmental sustainability. Those models are Healthy Cities and Educating Cities. We saw how they complemented each other, and that they had a great deal in common. This strategic plan has given us the possibility of applying public policies that are more directed, more holistic, aiming at a higher level of interrelationship between the departments, a wider vision of the future, working not only on the results of problems, but also mainly on their causes.

MONDIALI ANTIRAZZISTI
“FOOTBALL IS PART OF THE SOCIETY AND HERITAGE OF WORKING CLASS”, A TALK WITH CASS PENNANT

During last Mondiali Antirazzisti edition, concluded on July the 11th, there has been the opportunity to meet a person very well known by the ultras world, that is one of most important component of the Antiracist World Cup since its beginning. This person is Cass Pennant, a famous ex-hooligan of West Ham, who attended to the debate organised by Ultras groups about the supporter “membership card”, a certification to “being a good person” that will be necessary since next year to enter in Italian stadiums.
Cass Pennant – English man with Jamaica origins – was in 70ies the leader of hooligan group Inter City Firm (ICF), and was one of first persons to pay with detention his “fan excesses”.
Since his experience born the wish to study and document European ultras culture, and in particular the fans as mirror of working class.

“Football must be part of the society, football fan is an heritage of working class because it born from there – Pennant says in an interview during Mondiali – but actual laws are getting people far away from football, they make it just a business for upper class. If fans of different teams work together in a smart way, this process can change”. “I’m not agree with some violent fan’s attitudes - Pennant continues – but we have not forget that fans are the mirror of the society, not a problem of it, and social aspect is strictly related with football one”.

“This is the first time for me at Mondiali – he says – and I was happy to have been invited by organisers, because I heard about it, I read and watched images of this event. I like very much this mind, to see supporters historically rivals working together, playing tournament and bring a common aim. I also like the mix between sport, culture and music, an authentic way to live football”.

The POIN-Conference
Frankfurt, 8-9 November 2010

Physical activity and sport require adequate environments!

Indoor and outdoor sports facilities, as well as infrastructures for self-organized physical activity such as parks, lanes or open landscape are major resources for physical activity and sport all over Europe.

On the one hand, attitude towards physical activity has changed dramatically across all ages, becoming broader and a lot more differentiated – therefore challenging to adapt facilities for physical activity and sport. On the other hand, infrastructures for physical activity and sport are outworn and in urgent need for renovation and modernization. Management and operating issues need updating.

·                          How to improve infrastructure for physical activity and sport?

·                          What are good practice examples of policies and instruments for infrastructure development for physical activity and sport in Europe and worldwide?

·                          How to coordinate health promotion and infrastructure development?

POIN2010 provides answers!

POIN2010 will deal with those questions and challenges. This conference presents new EU-guidelines on improving infrastructures for physical activity and sport. These guidelines were developed in the EU-project IMPALA. Examples of good practice will be put up for discussion at the event from European as well as from non-European countries.

The POIN2010-Conference will offer opportunities for exchange of experience and information to policy makers and key stakeholders in fields such as sport, health, urban and spatial planning.
