Successful Citizen Panel in Albania
Sport and Culture in Dialogue

Artan Shyti, Director of the Institute for Scientific Research in Sport in Albania has shared with more than 50 participants:

"Sport is and will be, for sure, more and more important in the society. We should be ready to use this importance and not to be used from it. We must play an active role in ensuring that the sport of the future keeps growing in a positive way, preventing it from a lot of negative impacts that the modern society has influences on it. Sport can be a very important instrument for a better society but in order to play this role, sport must develop itself in the right way. If we want to play an active and positive role in the society we should be able to develop and active and positive sport system. The people working in sport and people that collaborate with sport institutions must be aware of the positive impact that a healthy, democratic, modern, effective and serious sport system has on the entire society in local, national and international level."

First EU sports ministerial meeting endorses social priorities
From EurActiv, 11 May 2010

At their first ever official meeting, the EU’s 27 sports ministers asked the European Commission to draft a policy framework that highlights the educational and social role of sport.

On the 10 May, European sports ministers held their first ever formal policy debate on how to incorporate sport into EU policy. Now that the EU has a competence on the matter, sport will no longer continue to be merely a major financial activity, they stressed. "Beyond that, we recognise its education and social role", Spanish Secretary of State for Sport Jaime Lissavetzky told the press after the meeting.

He said that all delegations had agreed that the EU’s "leading role in sport should focus on social considerations".

The ministers’ conclusions set out five broad objectives and priorities for future EU action in the field. But according to Lissavetzky, several ministers stressed that more studies and data were needed to help shape policies.
