REGISTER NOW - BE A PART OF THE UNWTO’S INAUGURAL SUMMIT ON TOURISM, SPORT AND MEGA-EVENTS IN 2010
The year 2010 will present unprecedented opportunity to the world, and the travel and tourism (T&T) sector in particular. Following the immense challenges of 2009, 2010 is set to be a year of re-inspiring, refocusing, reuniting and rebuilding. The ‘tourism economy’ - a vital source of employment, revenue, investment, trade and unity - has been recognised as a powerful stimulus for recovery from the global economic crisis, and a force for reigniting the spirit of the people of the world.
As a reflection of the importance of the T&T sector to unlock nations’ growth potential, and the role of major sporting, business and cultural events to re-inspire tourists to travel to global destinations, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the South African Government announced on 30 October 2009 that the T&T world’s first International Summit on Tourism, Sport and Mega-events will be held in Sandton, South Africa, from 24 to 26 February 2010.
The summit has been perfectly timed to kick off a number of major global events scheduled for 2010, including the FIFA World CupTM in South Africa; the Commonwealth Games in India; the World Exhibition in Shanghai, China; and the Winter Games in Canada. Given the importance of these and other events around the world as vehicles for T&T sector restimulation and enduring growth, the UNWTO seeks to align the global T&T sector’s leadership to create a framework for leveraging sport and other mega-events (including cultural and entertainment events, exhibitions and business conventions) for economic growth.
The summit will provide a forum for active discussion, debate and direction around the leverage of mega-events as a vital force for sector growth and advancement in national development strategies, taking into account the economic, social and environmental consequences for host nations, and the massive multimedia opportunities for nation branding and export promotion.
South Africa’s Department of Tourism and Department of Sport, as well as CNN International as global media partner, will be working in partnership with the UNWTO.
"South Africa is proud to be working with the UNWTO in creating and hosting the UNWTO’s inaugural Summit on Tourism, Sport and Mega-events in 2010," said South African Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk at the announcement of the summit. "We know that, as a developing country, we cannot afford to have underutilised infrastructure after the World Cup, and we understand that we must plan ahead to make sure our infrastructure and skills investments do not go to waste."
As stated by Dr Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the UNWTO: "This important meeting reflects the increasing economic and social impacts of sport, mega-events and tourism. It will establish new lines of thinking on operations, economics and sustainability. We are delighted to be working with South Africa - particularly in 2010, which will see a great sporting mega-event in the FIFA World CupTM, which promises so much for Africa."
The summit will be held parallel to the annual Meetings Africa, Africa’s top business tourism exhibition hosted annually by South African Tourism.
As a reflection of the global importance and excitement around the summit, a number of key global sponsors and partners have already shown strong support, including CNN International, South African Airways, VISA International, Mango Airlines, the University of Johannesburg, the Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute of the United Kingdom, and RETOSA (the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa), to name but a few.
With huge international interest already being shown, the summit with space for 450 delegates is filling up fast from across the media, industry, academic, United Nations, government and other sectors.

RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM, 24 February 2010
Colloquium on Mega-event Sustainability
Mega-events are critically positioned in the marketing, decision making and strategy development of tourism destinations. Both sport and non-sport mega-events draw significant numbers of tourists and corporate sponsorship, leverage a wide range of business opportunities, showcase the host location to a global audience, and boost citizen morale and pride. In order to reap such benefits, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and its supporting network are faced with the severe challenge to achieve a net benefit for the economic, social and environmental dimensions of the host country. The Colloquium on Mega-event Sustainability focuses on best practice in enhancing such sustainability for host countries’ tourism systems. The colloquium aims to tap into the experiences of international and South African organisers and researchers, who have firsthand experience of the conceptual and practical realities of mega-events. Speakers, panel members and colloquium attendees will unpack the dynamics of:
disciplined political and industry leadership in cooperating and competing to host mega-events;
securing local support and people development in preparing for mega-events;
mega-sport event tourists’ expectations;
leveraging business opportunities prior to, during and after mega-events; and
impact analysis (economic, social and environmental).
Registration as an audience participant
The Colloquium on Mega-event Sustainability accommodates a limited number of selected papers. The organisers anticipate that a majority of delegates may wish to participate in the colloquium without formally presenting papers. If you wish to register your interest to participate without presenting a paper, please do so with Prof. Daneel van Lill (annetten@uj.ac.za) at the University of Johannesburg, and Dr Scott McCabe (Scott.Mccabe@nottingham.ac.uk) at the Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute. Your expression of interest to register as an audience participant should include an indication of your research interest(s), your contact information and institutional capacity, as well as a 30-word biography.
Paper submissions for the Colloquium on Mega-event Sustainability
The Colloquium Organising Committee consists of academe coordinated by the School of Tourism and Hospitality in the Management Faculty of the University of Johannesburg; the Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute based at Nottingham University, United Kingdom; the South African Ministry of Tourism, and the UNWTO.
The committee welcomes proposals for papers/case studies on the abovementioned themes from researchers, scholars, consultants, policy makers and practitioners worldwide. The closing date for the submission of abstracts for oral presentations is Wednesday 16 December 2009. Late submissions will not be considered.
Please e-mail your 200-word abstract (Microsoft Word format, body text in Arial 12-point font, 1,5 spacing, justified) to Prof. Daneel van Lill (annetten@uj.ac.za) at the University of Johannesburg, and Dr Scott McCabe (Scott.Mccabe@nottingham.ac.uk) at the Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute by no later than 16 December 2009, with copies to Dr Shaun Vorster (svorster@tourism.gov.za) and Prof Geoffrey Lipman (glipman@gmail.com). Include all authors’ contact information and institutional capacities, as well as a 30-word biography on the first page of the document.
By 18 December 2009, you will receive a reply containing an acceptance or rejection letter, with a submission or delegate number that should be included in all further correspondence. At that point, you will also be required to register on www.meetingsafrica.co.za/summit.
Abstracts of presentations will be published in the colloquium programme. A synthesis of the conference proceedings will be published by the UNWTO.
With the gracious support of our local airline partner, Mango, a very limited number of sponsorships for domestic travel and accommodation expenses will be made available to invited speakers, panel members, and, where possible, postgraduate students. Please indicate whether you wish to be considered for sponsorship when you submit your abstract or expression of interest.
