assunto Ethics Scale (research conduct)
Dear Colleagues,
I am working on the development of a scale to measure moral judgment in the context of research conduct. The scale is targeted to graduate students. I know we are all very busy, but if some of you would be willing to take a look at the items and comment, I would be highly appreciative. The items may stimulate additional scenarios which would also be great. I would like to pilot the thing in a week or two.
Andy
1) You are a faculty member working towards tenure at a major research university; publishing expectations are very high. A friend at another university offers to include you as second author on two papers related to your research area if you will help improve the writing quality of the papers. This action is…

2) You have conceptualized an excellent study that is sure to make a contribution to your field. However, out of 400 distributed questionnaires only 120 were completed – thus a 30% response rate which is considered low by research standards. You are concerned that a top tier journal will not accept such a low response rate. One way to remedy the problem would be to artificially lower the number of questionnaires that were distributed to increase the response rate. This action is…

3) You have completed a highly rigorous and valid study that extends the work of some earlier studies. Your study holds great potential for publication. However, when it comes time to write the article you develop a bad case of writer’s block and are struggling to write a good introduction. To deal with the problem you copy another author’s introduction from a paper on the same topic and then change some of the words to make it more like your own. This action is…

4) You are using a questionnaire in your study that takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. You administer the questionnaire to your study’s sample using an electronic survey software program. In the introduction message to prospective subjects, you indicate that the questionnaire will only take 15 minutes rather than 30. You figure this will entice more people to complete the questionnaire. This action is…

5) You are conducting a review of literature for a paper you are writing and hope to publish. The project has taken much longer than you thought and you are now crunched with multiple deadlines. In an effort to save time, you do not read several of the references you cite. You have seen the references in many other articles and figure the studies and or essays must be good. This action is…

6) You have conceptualized an idea for a good study. The most difficult part will be gaining access to the necessary participants. After talking to a colleague, you find out that she can help you gain access to the participants. Knowing that this individual will have a vote towards you getting tenure, you offer to include them as an author for helping. This action is…

7) You have completed serving as the advisor for a student’s dissertation. In this particular case you knew little about the content of the student’s area of study. However, there were no other faculty members available so you obliged the student. As the advisor, you helped the student improve the quality of the writing as well as general organization but could not contribute conceptually. The student offers to include you as an author for serving as their advisor and you accept knowing you need to earn tenure. This action is…

8) You are ready to submit a completed paper to a top tier journal called the Journal of Excellence. In order to earn tenure at your university it is critical that a certain number of publications are published in high quality journals. You know two people that review for the Journal of Excellence and let them know that you are submitting a paper on a particular topic. You hope that at least on of them will be a reviewer. This action is…

9) You are in your final year of earning tenure. Know you need at least one more publication to receive consideration. In hopes of speeding up the publication process you submit the same paper to three different journals concurrently. You figure you will go with the first journal that gives a positive review and then remove the paper for consideration from the other remaining journals.
