Female Athletes Injured More Than Male Athletes

ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2010) — Female athletes experience dramatically higher rates of specific musculoskeletal injuries and medical conditions compared to male athletes, according to exercise physiologist Vicki Harber in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta.

According to her paper, depending on the sport, there can be a two- to sixfold difference in these types of injuries between male and female athletes. That’s because many training programs developed for female athletes are built on research using young adult males and don’t take the intrinsic biological differences between the sexes into account.

Harber has authored a comprehensive guide for coaches, parents and administrators, entitled The Female Athlete Perspective, and published by Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L), which addresses these and other medical issues known to influence women’s participation in sport.

The paper is based on a thorough review of the current literature on the subject, Harber’s extensive knowledge as a researcher in female athlete health and her work in the development of female athletes.

Musculoskeletal injuries, particularly knee and shoulder injuries, are most prevalent, with increased probability of re-injury, says Harber, noting that many of these injuries are preventable. Building awareness about appropriate support for young female athletes and changes to training programs are critical to help them reach their athletic and personal potential, injury-free.

Harber found the risk of the Female Athlete Triad -- three separate but interrelated conditions of disordered eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis -- is another area that urgently needs attention for young female athletes.

For female athletes to thrive injury-free, attention must be paid to their proper nutrition to ensure both the athletic performance and healthy reproductive performance associated with bone health and overall wellbeing, Harber found.

O, Laercio, pessoal. Acho maravilhoso (sic) quando ele fala que os treinos ’don’t take the intrinsic biological differences between the sexes into account’.
Ora bolas, o obvio do obvio, e as diferencas biologicas intrinsecas entre os proprios homens, sao levadas em consideracao? entre um de 20 aninhos e outro  como eu, de 35 (agora tao pensando nisso...)? !Entre um de 2 metros e 10 e um de 1 metro e meio? A questao e’ mais embaixo, e e’ otimo que seja discutida na lista de genero,uma aposta e um olhar com as lentes de genero nesta questao, pode amplia-la: na minha experiencia de tecnico (ja fazem alguns anos...) eu reparei que, comparativamente com algumas epocas, a molecada da decada de 1990, mesmo com super tenis e outras protecoes (eu jogava de conga! alguem sabe o q e’ isso?bom,nao tinha ’air’ ) se machucava muito mais...sem estatisticas, percepcao. E sempre apostei na hipotese da ausencia de brincadeiras de rua, de brincadeiras de corre e pega e esconde e pula em geral: alem de serem muito gostosas, maravilhosas em si, elas trazem, entre tantas outras coisas legais, o beneficio de prepararem o corpo pros choques, mudancas de direcao, saltos,impactos, etc, das praticas esportivas. Tracando um paralelo bem basico, mulheres tiveram condicoes de,enqquanto meninas, brincarem, se prepararem? Chegaram no esporte com quais condicoes corporais? Se nao tiveram estas condicoes de brincar, pq seria? Claro, restricoes relacionadas a feminilidade almejada, meninas suadas brincando na rua e’ meio q esquisito,etc e tal. Isso esta voltando com fuerza, nao podemos parar de ficar atentos, e promover a brincadeira para todas e todos e etcs. Reduzir isso a uma questao biologica e’ tudo o que se quer para mostrar q a mulher nao pode,nao consegue,tem q pegar leve, etc e tal, se nao podem proibir, como de fato a historia mostra, ao menos se diminui! nao era essa a eterna proposta dos galvoes buenos pra popularizar o  futebol fem? Diminuir a trave, o tempo, a bola, enfim, diminuir a mujer. A sindrome da mujer atleta, descrita e escrita, tbem tem q ser analisada com as lentes de genero, ora, eating disorders, pq as mujeres estao mais propensas? nao seria a pressao da estetica,etc? O q dizer da menstruacao, este ’ fantasma ’ q sempre pairou sobre a mujer atleta...Olhos e ouvidos atentos! Shalom! (shalom e’ paz)
