Latin America Organization in Sport Management

Website: http://www.algede.org/

Since ALGEDE was created we have been contacted by people from various places eager to join the association. It has been incredible the positive reply as it was felt that there was a need to have an organization of this kind in this area of the world. We have been contacted by people from USA, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. The website is coordinated by Luisa Velez Luisa.Velez@cortland.edu

Activities:

   * A presentation of ALGEDE was conducted at NASSM, May 2009 by Gonzalo Bravo (Vice-President) at the general assembly during the business meeting.

Information:

   * We received the information that in May 2009 was created the ‘Associação Brasileira de Gestão do Esporte’ (Brazilian Association of Sport Management), the president is Dr. Flávia da Cunha Bastos flaviacb@usp.br Universidade de São Paulo. They celebrated  the 3rd National Congress in Sport Management, in São Paulo, 25-27 November.

   * We were also contacted by José Pedro Sarmento <psarmento@fade.up.pt> from Faculdade de Desporto da Universidade do Porto - Portugal, who is president of the ’Associação Portuguesa de Gestores do Desporto’ (Portuguese Association of Sport Managers). Together with Spanish colleagues he created the Iberoamerican Union of Sport Managers 3 years ago. European Association of Sport Management

Website: http://www.easm.net

The membership period 2009-2010 in the world of European Association for Sport Management has begun with a successful conference in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam ArenA provided a magnificent location for listening to interesting presentations as well as meeting professionals, practitioners, students and friends in the area of sport management.

The President of EASM from 2005 to 2009, Berit Skirstad, decided to step down, so the EASM board needed a new leader. Mikel Urdangarin was chosen to fill this position in the General Assembly in Amsterdam. In addition, Herbert Woratschek was selected as the Vice-President. Board members Ria Vanderstraeten and Dimitra Papadimitriou were due to retire, so GA chose Veerle De Bosscher, Hallgeir Gammelsaeter and Jolanta Zysko as new members of the EASM board. We would like to use this opportunity to thank Mrs. Skirstad for her remarkable contributions to EASM, and wish good luck for President Urdangarin and the new board for the years to come.

EASM is eager to welcome all those who are associated and interested in sport management to join the versatile group of EASM members. More information is available on the website http://www.easm.net

To conclude, please save the dates for the next EASM conference in Prague, Czech Republic, in 15-18 September 2010. Go and visit http://www.easm2010.com for inspiration!

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying your semester. It was a pleasure seeing many of you at our NASSM conference in South Carolina this past June. Since that time, the NASSM Executive Council has been actively pursuing a number of initiatives. As one example, we have taken steps to make the selection process for our journal editors more democratic and transparent. In following several of the initiatives started by Past-President Ming Li, we are also working on strategies to increase engagement opportunities for all NASSM members who wish to take a more active role in the organization.  This will be complimented by our efforts to make the NASSM Conference more accessible to all persons wishing to attend. Finally, we struck a task force over the summer to examine governance issues within the Society. These represent just a sample of the tasks on which we are working, and as you can tell, we have several irons in the fire. I hope to provide feedback in the coming months.

I also want to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual conference this June in Tampa. There are a number of wonderful activities planned, and the conference promises to include great presentations, lively debate, and wonderful learning opportunities. And, what better place to catch up with colleagues than the beautiful beaches of Tampa, Florida?

Grace and Peace.
