Projection System: Quick Fixes

As the new school year starts many of you will be using a projector to display your health and physical education lessons. Well, at least until something goes wrong. Here are some trouble shooting tips so that you can keep teaching . . .

Unplug and securely reconnect the video cable between your computer and projector.
Wait - the projector typically needs 30 seconds to warm up.
If the projector is in standby or sleep mode, the power light may indicate that the projector is on but you will still need to press the Power button to wake it up.
Use the remote to press the source button making sure the projector is set for the computer source.
Make sure the computer is set to send signals to the projector. Most notebooks let you use a keyboard shortcut, such as FN-F8 to quickly switch the video output to an external display. For Windows 7 - select the Connect to a Projector option (Click the start button, select Control Panel, and select Appearance and Personalization. Under Display section, click the Connect to a Projector link, which brings up a window with options for Disconnect Projector, Duplicate, Extend, and Projector Only). The Duplicate option makes it so that the projector displays the same screen you see on your laptop. The Extend option creates a new Desktop area that serves as an extension of your Windows Desktop. With Projector Only, Windows turns off the display on your notebook and you are only able to see your Desktop on the projector screen. If you are having trouble, then select Projector Only setting. Macintosh user should select System Preferences -> Displays to make the appropriate settings.
Projector Suddenly Shuts Off or Provides a Temperature Warning
Turn the projector off and let it cool down for at least ten minutes. Make sure that the area around the projector is clear for proper ventilation. If your projector has been around for awhile, you may need to clean the dust filter. Your user manual will describe how to remove and clean the filer.
Image is Skewed rather than Rectangular
Make sure the projector is perpendicular to the screen.
Use your keystone feature to adjust the image. The keystone feature is helpful when the top or bottom of the screen is wider than the opposite side (vertical keystone) or one side is wider or skinnier than the opposite side (horizontal keystone).
Image is Out of Focus
Use the focus ring to adjust the image.
If you still have trouble, the projector may not be located within its given focal range. Check your manual to find out what the functional range (distance from screen) is.
Image is Fuzzy
Check the length of your cable. See if you can find a shorter cable and use it.
Only Part of the Image is On the Screen
The resolution of projector and computer must match. Change the resolution on your PC to match the resolution for your projector (check the user manual).

Actually move the projector closer or farther away from the screen.
Android and iOS Dominate Smartphone Market

Nielsen has released a report detailing the leading smartphone manufacturers and mobile operating systems in the United States. The report shows that Android and iOS are leading pack. Android is by far the dominant mobile phone operating system in the U.S., accounting for 39% of the market. Apple’s iOS is in second place with 28% market share. Blackberry OS brings up the rear with 20%. At the bottom are Windows Phone 7, webOS, and Symbian. Apple is still the top smartphone manufacturer. Android is only leading the way because so many manufactures use Android. HTC is the leading Android phone manufacturer in the US followed by Motorola and Samsung.

Google Apps

Google + Tips

Last month we introduced you to Google+ - this month we will share a few tips to make your experience with Google+ more enjoyable.

Adjust your email notification options:
By default, Google+ will send you Gmail account with notifications for everything involving your Google+ account. A better option is to open Google Account options and uncheck those items that you don’t want to receive in your Gmail account.

Disable resharing:
Anything you share with a select few can spread to other users. To disable resharing of one of your posts, just click the arrow in the upper-right corner of the post and then click Disable resharing.

Use the Your Circles option:
The Circles system lets you set barriers between the groups you want to share with. If you typically do not share private information, then use the Your circles sharing option to automatically share with all your circles at one time.

Change your profile’s field-sharing settings:
Open your Google Account Profile and privacy settings, then click Edit visibility on profile, and then click the individual profile fields and determine which ones you want to make public.
Photograph: Quick Tips

F/Stops and Apertures

F/Stop controls exposure and deep of field.

Exposure control - how much light is allowed to enter the camera (controlled by size of aperture.

Depth of Field - describes range of acceptable focus in an image; 3 factors control depth of field:

F/Stop Tips

Use f/stop 2 to keep one object in focus

Use f/22 to keep everything in focus

Subject to Camera Distance Tips

The closer you are to your subject, the shallower the depth of field will be for any given f/stop choice. The farther away you are from the subject, the greater the depth of field will be for any given f/stop choice.

ISO Tips

Exposure is a combination four factors (scene brightness, ISO, f/stops and shutter speeds).

For outdoor shooting - use ISO100 setting

For indoor shooting - use ISO 400 setting

Exposure systems are based on the rule that ISO speed becomes shutter speed at f/stop 16 on a bright, sunny day, with distinct shadows for a correct exposure:

Using ISO 100 on a sunny day - set exposure to 1/125 at f/16

Using ISO 400 on a sunny day - set exposure to 1/500 at f/16

Shutter Speed Tips

Use faster shutter speeds for freeze frame action shots.

Research Summary

Obesity Research 2005; 13:A175
Total Energy Expenditure In Morbidly Obese Subjects: A New Device Validation
De Cristofaro, et al.

Introduction: Indirect calorimetry is the most frequently method used to estimate total energy expenditure (TEE) and, together with Harris-Benedict equations, are widely used in clinical settings to provide the basis for prescribing and individualizing energy intake to attain a desired level of energy deficit. Because resting energy expenditure (REE) is an important TEE determinant, measurement or prediction of REE is generally the first step to predict TEE. An advanced technique, the HealthWear™ Armband, designed to assess TEE in free-living adults, represents a new frontier for evaluating energy expenditure and physical activity.

Aim: To test the validity/accuracy of the SenseWear®/Armband for estimating daily energy expenditure in morbidly obese subjects.

Method: Among 288 morbidly obese subjects (BMI range 35.0 – 60.9) we randomly selected 37 subjects (29 females, and 9 males) (mean±SD, age 38.7±13.2 years; BMI 40.1±6.4 kg/m2). Estimated energy expenditure from the SenseWear®/Armband (The HealthWear™ Armband, BodyMedia, Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis, IN, USA) was compared with energy expenditure determined using indirect open-circuit calorimetry (Sensor Medics Vmax 29N, Metabolic Cart, Yorbe Linda CA, USA) and Harris-Benedict equation which served as the criteria measurements. Waist circumference (WC, cm) was also measured.

Results: No significant difference was found in mean TEE between SenseWear®/Armband (2002±433 Kcal/day) and Harris-Benedict equation (1984±396) while significant differences were found between Sensor Medics Vmax (1742±403 Kcal/day) Vs. SenseWear®/Armband (p=0.009) and Vs. Harris-Benedict equation (p=0.01). Higher correlation was found between Sensewear and BMI (r=0.7, p>0.0001) as well as with WC (r=0.8, p>0.0001) than between TEE measured by Sensor Medics Vmax and BMI (r= 0.6, p>0.0001) and WC (r=0.7, p>0.0001).

Conclusion: Our results suggested that SenseWear® Armband could be an acceptable device to measure TEE in morbidly obese subjects during observational period. In conjunction with indirect calorimetry represents a useful method to estimate energy expenditure in order to personalize nutritional management. SenseWear® Armband could make the assessment of TEE accurate, portable and inexpensive, could define subjects’ life-style and could promote physical activity to prevent weight gain.
How to Take Great Photos using your Phone

1. Know when your shutter clicks. If there is a lag, then account for it.

2. Keep your phone steady.

3. Take your ISO setting off Auto. Outside, set the ISO to its lowest value. In low light situations, bump the ISO up as high as possible.

4. Use the flash to show daytime details. The burst will reduce the dark shadows caused by bright sunlight.

5. Do not use digital zoom ---- only use optical zoom.

6. Enhance your photos using apps, such as Photo fx, Tiltshift, and Photosynth for iOS. For Android phones, use Vignette, Camera 360, or Retro Camera.
Q and A

Q: I currently teach Adapted PE with most of my time spent in with students in
an inclusion setting.  I just purchased an iphone with the intention of
using it to record progress, attendance, keep track of goals, IEPs, etc.  I
don’t often grade students, they receive grades from the general PE teacher.
Which software would be the most user friendly for my situation.  I am okay
with computer skills, however, I can stuck and can’t find my way when a
program gets too complicated.  I have been trying to use onenote with a
gradebook template, having trouble navigating.  Would appreciate a user
friendly program.  Sincerely a budding techy PE teacher

A: Go to the iTunesstore and search for IEP - there are four or five programs for iPad/iPod that are free - that you should try to see if they work for you.

Q: When will we hear who received the PEP grants?

A: Actually - we heard last week - check this URL: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/
whitephysed/2011awards.html Congrats to all the winners - and let us know if we can be of assistance.

New Devices (The Up and Coming and The Here)

Adidas Wearable Coach

The idea is a simple but ingenious one; the device plays musical notes that correspond to certain movements, strike just the right ones and you know you’ve gotten in the zone. What’s more, while the device has only been tested with pitchers so far (with some successful results), it’s not hard to see how it could also be applied to a whole range of other sports and activities. Take a look.

Back of the Hand Touch Interface

The device was designed by Kei Nakatsuma, a PhD student at the University of Tokyo. Combining a series of infrared detectors and piezoelectric sensors, it can detect input on the back of your hand as well as sound input from your gestures. It’s not without its limitations; it can handle pinch or rotate gestures just yet, and harsh sunlight makes it harder to see your fingers, but this promises to makes interacting remotely with your smartphone possible.
