Subject: Re: Triathlon Research

Hello Mitchell (and List),

Not sure, Mitchell, if you’ve received much response to your post re: triathlon; there seems to be enough interest to mail to listserv, so here goes.

I’ve done much of my research these past five years on triathlon. It’s also where I spend a lot of my applied time, and I am a retired competitive triathlete. If anyone is going to be at the New York City Triathlon this weekend, I’ll be speaking on the mental aspects of triathlon (as part of the medical (injury prevention) symposium) at the Expo tomorrow, so please come say HI!

My dissertation (2008) focused on triathlon injury, titled "EXAMINATION OF INJURY AND THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SPORT INJURY ANXIETY AND INJURY SEVERITY AND FREQUENCY AMONG OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLETES."

Abstract: Anxiety as a risk factor for injury in triathlon has yet to be investigated.  The purpose of this study was to describe the nature and scope of injury, and the association between sport injury anxiety and injury severity and frequency among triathletes competing in an Olympic distance triathlon. Triathletes who reported higher levels of sport injury anxiety reported higher levels of injury severity and injury frequency compared to those who reported lower levels of sport injury anxiety.  Other injury determinants such as gender, injury type, age, and other were also examined.
