Resumo

Este dossiê especial do JOPERD constitui não apenas uma continuidade, mas também uma expansão e um avanço dos trabalhos anteriores sobre o acesso à educação física e a outras oportunidades de atividade física baseadas no ambiente escolar para estudantes da educação básica (K–12) em escolas públicas (Killian). O Shape of the Nation reúne relatórios que acompanharam os perfis de políticas públicas específicas de educação física em cada estado dos Estados Unidos (National Association for Sport and Physical Education & American Heart Association, 1993, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2012; SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators & American Heart Association, 2016). Kern (2026) destacou um breve histórico da vigilância nacional das políticas estaduais de educação física.

Além de fornecer uma nova atualização sobre o que os estados norte-americanos possuem — ou deixam de possuir — em termos de políticas e estatutos estaduais codificados de apoio (isto é, King et al., 2026), este dossiê especial também incluiu: (a) uma visão geral do déficit generalizado e da substancial variabilidade interestadual (2026); (b) os problemas persistentes associados à oferta de educação física para estudantes com deficiência (Wilson, 2026); e (c) uma introdução e um chamado à ação para que profissionais de educação física iniciem uma defesa sustentada e proativa da área (Paulson, 2026).
