Instituto Palmeiras is a martial dance school established by Chanzo Greenidge as part of the ADANIS - African Diasporic Arts/Activism/Analysis Networking and Information Services. The school is based in Curepe, Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean.

Its mission is to research, share and publicise the power and philosophy of Capoeira Angola and other African diasporic arts and/or artists in the Caribbean and beyond. The ONSIDE research and development programme focuses on the issue of sport and society through the lens of the ADANIS.

Instituto Palmeiras is dedicated to the training and preparation of children from 4-14, but also facilitates private workshops for adults. Instituto Palmeiras has been instrumental in introducing Fair Trade sport materials in the Caribbean and continues to support and implement fair trade practices.

The founder of Instituto Palmeiras, Chanzo Greenidge, has been involved in sport for development for several years now as a practitioner of Capoeira Angola and he is a former collegiate and semi-professional soccer player. At present he is a translator and researcher specialising in Culture, Migration and Diaspora Studies, Sport and Society with a PhD in International Relations. One of the projects initiated by Chanzo Greenidge at Instituto Palmeiras is Raisin’ in the Sun which focuses on girls and young women.

The Raisin’ in the Sun project is a critically applied research on the Drama of African Diaspora and Association Football. Association football is an artefact of international trade and globalisation valued by billions as both a source of entertainment and a means to upward social mobility. Raisin’ in the Sun is a trans-disciplinary project which examines and (re)combines the images and realities of football and sport in general as both factors and reflections of global discourses of race, gender, sexuality, class and religion/ethics.
